Govt. to focus on ceasefire violations The Government is expected to focus LTTE attention towards the hampering of development in the North-East due to continuous ceasefire violations which is detrimental to the ongoing peace process, when two parties meet today in Batticaloa. The meeting between Defence Secretary Austin Fernando and LTTE Eastern Commander Karuna is due to take place today at 9.30 am in Batticaloa under the chairmanship of SLMM Chief Trond Furuhovde. However, the agenda for the meeting has not been completed by the SLMM Chief by last afternoon. The continuous ceasefire violations and Hartal organised by pro-LTTE organisations in the North East has had a bad effect on the development process in the North East. Official government sources told the Daily News yesterday that problems faced by the Eastern Muslims will also be one of the issues the government expects to discuss at this meeting. Human right's violations are also expected to be discussed at length at this meeting. The meeting between Defence Secretary Austin Fernando and LTTE Eastern leader Karuna is meant to discuss ceasefire violations and to make a closer understanding between the two parties. The talks also come in the wake of LTTE not complying with the SLMM ruling when settling the standoff between the two parties in Kuchchaveli on Sunday. RW |
