Aceh rebel leader Killed

JAKARTA, Thursday (AFP) Indonesian police said Thursday they have killed a man who led a unit of the Aceh separatist rebel group based in neighbouring North Sumatra province.

Police killed Misran Gajah, 32, in a shootout in the district of Asahan in North Sumatra on Wednesday, the state Antara news agency said, citing a local police report.

Police described Gajah as the leader in Asahan of the Free Aceh Movement (GAM), which has been fighting for an independent state in Aceh province since 1976..

Officers also arrested his three accomplices, including a woman..
