Lanka's foreign policy serving national interests - FM

Tyronne Fernando Minister of Foreign Affairs addressing the District Conference of Rotary District 3220 at the BMICH on Saturday said that as a democracy Sri Lanka's foreign policy could serve no other interests than the national interest and the aspirations of the common man. The twin objectives of this have been a durable peace and economic growth. A major step has been the signing of the Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA) with the USA. Sri Lanka is the only Asian Country with which the USA has signed such an agreement.

We are also pursing these objectives at the UN, the Non-aligned Movement, the Commonwealth, SAARC, BIMSTEC and CORAL.

Answering a question on whether Sri Lanka was one of the 41 Coalition partners of the USA in the Iraq War, Mr. Fernando answered in the negative. What has happened has happened and it is now important that the UN gets involved in rehabilitation work in Iraq, keeping the US within the UN fold and making the UN play a positive role in the future. Britain has a key role to play in this, he said.
