End of the road for Whatmore

By Sa'adi Thawfeeq

Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka (BCCSL) CEO Anura Tennekoon confirmed yesterday that the BCCSL interim committee had decided at their executive committee held recently, not to extend the contract of Sri Lanka team coach Dav Whatmore. Whatmore's present contract expires at the end of May.

Tennekoon said that no moves have been made by the BCCSL so far to find a successor to Whatmore because they didn't want to upset the team's preparations for the World Cup.

Whatmore was contracted for a second term with the Sri Lanka team shortly after the 1999 World Cup and under his guidance Sri Lanka recorded 10 consecutive Test victories and also reached the semi-finals of the 2003 World Cup.

In his first tenure as coach from 1995 to 1997, he guided the team to win the World Cup in 1996.

The four-nation Sharjah tournament from April 3-10 will in all probability be Whatmore's final assignment with the national team.

Sanath to quit?

Sri Lanka selector Ashley de Silva said that Sanath Jayasuriya had indicated to the national selectors that he does not want to continue with the Sri Lanka captaincy.

"Although he has not given it to us in writing, he had indicated to us during the selections for Sharjah," said De Silva. "Sanath indicated to us that he only wanted to continue until the Sharjah tour, but I am sure he will continue till we groom another person to take over from him," said De Silva.

"Once he comes back we will sit and talk to him. There were certain issues we didn't discuss because this selection was done in a bit of a rush. So we need to talk to him at length.

"If we are grooming someone we have to think of the future and no rush into it. If Sanath doesn't want to continue and we feel there is someone to take over, we will have to give him an interim period," De Silva said.
