Central Province CA - inter-province champions by S.M. Jiffrey Abdeen - Kandy Sports Correspondent Central Province Cricket Association became inter Provincial under-14 cricket champions when they beat Western Province Cricket Association (South) by 42 runs in the tournament organised by the North Central Province Cricket Association in conjunction with the Central Province Cricket Association and sponsored by the National Development Centre of the BCCSL in the final played at the Asgiriya Stadium, Kandy last Monday. Central Province CA's skipper Sachith Pathirana carried away the 'Player of the Tournament' award for his pulsating knock of 236 not out with 26 sixes and 14 fours in only 98 balls in a group match. He also bowled well throughout the tournament. Central Province CA won the toss and took first strike on a wicket which was not helpful to the batsmen who found run-getting difficult. Opener from St. Sylvesters College B.M.R. Ekanayake top scored with a fluent knock of 62 which included eight hits to the ropes. Sachith Pathirana scored 26 before he was run out. R. Chamalka bowled well to capture 3 for 26. When the Western Province batted they were never in the chase and were not only behind on the run rate but also lost wickets at regular intervals, Despite some good batting by later order batsmen S. Issadeen (20) and T. Fernando (19 not out) they fell short of their target by 42 runs. R.C. Jayatissa bowled best to capture 3 for 16 for the winners. |
