Resolution to congratulate Govt. peace moves

by P. Rajaratnam in Nuwara-Eliya

A resolution congratulating Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe on his government's peace initiative was moved by the Mayor of Nuwara Eliya Chandana Karunaratne at its monthly meeting.

D. Mathavan (Ind) said any peace moves should emerge from the grass roots levels. He reminded the members that it was Prof. G. L. Peiris who moved for a negotiated settlement when he was a member in the PA Cabinet with the support of the President. Now the same history had repeated itself.

H. M. Abeysinghe (PA) outlined the earlier events and the present approaches to the peace moves and the oppositions to it. He called upon all leaders to whatever political shades they belonged to be genuine and willing to mete out a just and lasting solution to this vexed problem.

The members present wished to know the sections to be followed by the council sent or directed by the Commissioner of the Local Government.

The Mayor told the councillors that the Acting Commissioner will function, until such time, the outcome of the Local Govt. Commissioner on the allegations against the present commissioner.

R. Balakrishnan, requested the Mayor to regularise the ownership of Municipal lines to the occupants which was pending for a number of decades.
