Paying travel advance is a BCCSL practice says chairman

BCCSL interim committee chairman Hemaka Amarasuriya said that in order to satisfy the requirements of this position, it was imperative for him to engage in foreign travel.

Amarasuriya further stated that in the past year he was required to make seven trips abroad despite his heavy work schedule as chairman Singer Group. He said that some of these trips were funded entirely at his own expense, one example being his trip to Australia during the VB series to defend the integrity of star bowler Muttiah Muralitharan.

Amarasuriya said that the total expense borne by the BCCSL for the seven trips was US$ 407.60 plus sterling pounds 1075.03.

He said that it is the practice to pay travel advances to Cricket Board officials when travelling abroad and that he was paid US$ 3500 for a 10 day stay in South Africa during the World Cup which included meetings of the ICC and IDI (commercial arm of the ICC). Amarasuriya stated that on his return he refunded a sum of US$ 3262.40 and submitted a travel expense statement to the cashier of the BCCSL.

"Contrary to belief several interim committee members have met expenses of the BCSL for travel, visas, telephones and entertainment from their own funds," said Amarasuriya clarifying the position of travel advances paid to him by the BCCSL.
