EPDP leader writer to president

EPDP leader Douglas Devananda in a letter to president Kumaratunga following the latest assassination of one of its members state.

The LTTE is attempting to achieve the status of the sole representatives of the Tamils of Sri Lanka', by physically annihilating the leadership of political parties which propagate policies based on democracy and political pluralism, as opposed to the fascist philosophy of the LTTE. Democracy and political pluralism are anathema to the fascist LTTE.

The LTTE believes that its end could be achieved by any means, including by way of killing and violating the human rights of political opponents and civilians. Unfortunately, the State's law and order machinery is a silent spectator in this sordid exercise of the LTTE.

We, the EPDP, the leading democratic force among the Tamils of Sri Lanka have nowhere to turn other than to the international community. We therefore, request that your government pressurises the LTTE, through appropriate means to.

(e) Get an undertaking from the LTTE that it would recognise political pluralism and the democratic rights of the population of the North and East of Sri Lanka.

(f) Get an undertaking from the LTTE that it would stop all violent activities against other political parties and civilians.

(g) Agree to international monitoring of human rights violations of the LTTE.

(h) Handover the LTTE members clearly identified as responsible for attacks on EPDP

members and supporters to the police to be dealt according to the laws of Sri Lanka.
