President Chandrika Kumaratunga is to felicitate Dr. P. R. Anthonis, in recognition of his uninterrupted service as Chancellor of the University of Colombo for 22 years. Prime Minster Ranil Wickremesinghe and several eminent guests will be present at the President's House on May 28, 2003 to honour the multifaceted personality - Dr. P. R. Anthonis, the President's House announced. Born in January, 1911 Dr. Anthonis was a product of St. Peter's College, Colombo and entered the Ceylon Medical College where he passed his examinations with a First Class at all times. Dr. Anthonis was committed to university development and from the very outset used his personal prestige and standing as a distinguished medical practitioner and eminent public personality to bring much needed resources for the university. After obtaining his Fellowship at the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1945 he embarked on his surgical career in 1947 at the Colombo General Hospital and continues to enjoy a very busy private practice to-date. During this career he has been the personal surgeon to almost every Governor General, Prime Minister, President and also religious leaders and most foreign envoys stationed in Colombo. He was the Chairman of the Sri Lanka Medical Council the watchdog of ethics and standards of the medical profession, the Founder President of the College of Surgeons of Sri Lanka, the President of the Sri Lanka Medical Association, the oldest medical association in the whole of Asia, and Editor of the Ceylon Medical Journal. He also found time to teach, train and to participate in both undergraduate and postgraduate examinations in surgery. He is also a founder Director of Seylan Bank, one of the leading private banks in Sri Lanka. In recognition of these activities and unmatched services to the country he was awarded the Deshamanya Award, the highest national honour awarded by the President of Sri Lanka and the Vishva Prasadini Award during the tenure of Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike. |
