Govt to appeal for aid internationally

Power and Energy Minister Karu Jayasuriya said that the government will make an International appeal for aid to flood victims . "What we need at the moment is building material like cement, for the reconstruction of houses. We hope to make this appeal during the course of this week", he said at a press conference held yesterday.

He also said that they are hoping to relocate the affected families and are looking at the possibility of giving a 20 perch land to each of these families who have lost their homes completely due to floods and landslides.

"Some of the banks have agreed to give loans for these people, we are trying our best to give these people some kind of relief economic wise and at the moment we are discussing these issues with the Land and the Plantation Ministries", he said.

According to the Minister, the Road Development Authority hopes to reconstruct damaged roads. " We hope to reconstruct the roads, and most of the roads will be back to normal by next Wednesday. We are trying our best to bring these roads back to normal".

A special medical service will be set up in the affected areas for the people who are traumatised by the loss of their loved ones. He also said that the number of deaths have gone down to 250 although a higher figure was stated earlier.
