The second lecture in the lecture series on Women's Rights organised by the National Committee on Women will be held on May 30, Friday at 4.30 p.m. at the Banquet Hall of the BMICH, Bauddhaloka Mawatha, Colombo 7. Dr. A. R. B. Amarasinghe, member of the Constitutional Council, Former Judge of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka and scholars in law will speak on "LAW and GENDER". Dr. Amarasinghe has been a distinguished student of the University of Ceylon, the Ceylon Law College, and Queens College, Oxford. A former Research Fellow at the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, University of London, he has also served as Acting Chief Justice on several occasions. As Chairman of the Law Commission he was appointed to two successive terms in office. As a scholar in the law this lecture on "Law and Gender" will bring new insights to the subject of gender. It would be of immense value in particular to professionals, students and Human Rights activists and policy planners. Attention will be diverted to new concepts, principles and details to the relationship between law and gender. In the present context of introducing new laws and law reforms, including a Women's Rights Act, the lecture will pinpoint new measures to take cognizance of within the legal system. Dr. Amarasinghe's multifaceted career covering the international scene, equips him to present a panoramic view of the new gender initiatives spreading at the global level. The speaker has served as Deputy-Secretary General of the Asian-African Legal Consultative Committee, New Delhi, South Pacific Regional Advisor to the Commonwealth Fund for Technical Co-operation (CFTC), and Senior Economic Affairs Officer at UNCTAD, Geneva. He has been engaged by various governments and international agencies as Advisor in African, Asian, Middle East and South Pacific countries on a variety of subjects. He is the author of 13 books and numerous papers published in Sri Lanka and abroad. "We expect Dr. Amarasinghe to present a candidly critical review of the subject. A greater part of his learned analysis we expect would help us to think clearly and coherently on a subject that is positively timely and useful within the context of Human Rights", says Mrs. Indrani Iriyagolle, Chairperson of the National Committee of Women of the Ministry of Women's Affairs.
