Private sector cooperation enlisted in flood relief work

by Kamani Alwis

Defence, Transport, Highways and Civil Aviation Minister Tilak Marapana, being dissatisfied with the ongoing flood relief distribution in the Ratnapura District has taken steps to enlist the support and cooperation of private sector organisations to streamline rehabilitation of families who are genuinely affected by floods and landslides in the District.

The Minister is hoping to entrust each of the companies that come forward, with the task of rehabilitating 25 such families, that come under the Government's relief programme. The Company Sector rehabilitation work will be implemented under Mihinudu Keerthiratne.

Addressing a discussion held in this connection at his Ministry recently, Defence Minister Marapana stated that this will be implemented on a Divisional Secretarial level and will be assisted by Army Officers to properly identify the affected families. The lists of such families will be made available to the private companies in the course of next week, said the Minister.

The possible threats in the areas devastated by landslides and allocation of alternative lands to the affected families will be identified by the Government soon and action will have to be initiated immediately thereafter to restore the morale and living conditions of these families, emphasised the Minister.

About 15 companies have come forward by now to take part in this programme. Dr. Mrs. Hiranthi Wijemanne on behalf of the UNICEF, Daya Group Chairman Daya Gamage and National Chamber of Commerce Chief Operational Officer Mrs. H. Hindurangala were among the speakers who expressed their views at this discussion attended by representatives from 11 private companies.
