Peterite 'Milo' power too much for Nalanda by Chris Dhambarage The reigning Milo 'A' division league champions St. Peter's College powered their way towards their second successive victory as they outplayed Nalanda 74-5 in their under 19 inter school rugby encounter played at Havelock Park yesterday. The Peterites playing like a true champion side got their act together well from the kick off and collected their points from seven goals and five tries having led 31 nil at half time. The Nalandians managed to score only a solitary try. Despite having rested four of their top players St. Peter's enjoyed a major amount of possession both in the line outs and set pieces. The forwards were equally brilliant in the loose while initiating several threatening moves which had the opposition under pressure throughout the game. The Peterite halves combination of M. Perera and D. Edirisinghe clicked well and the back division responded beautifully while running the ball at every given opportunity. The most outstanding among their three quarters was Mohamed Renaz who did not waste any time in planting three more tries in the first half. He added two more in the second half to complete a successful outing. The dynamic wing three quarter who scored a total of 33 tries last year seems to have struck early form and has seven tries to his tally in two outings in the current inter school rugby season. The Peterites piled up 43 points in the second half with skipper Romesh Ishaq, R. Razak, S. Rajakaruna, M. Fernando, M. Sheriff and D. Jude also scoring a try each. D. Edirisinghe converetd four tries while M. Sheriff converted three tries D. Nimal refereed. Ananda upset Meanwhile Ananda created the first major upset in the Milo league tournament as they edged out S. Thomas' College 8-7 in a thrilling encounter played at Longden Place yesterday. The Anandians scored a try and a penalty while S. Thomas' managed to score only a solitary goal. The Anandians took a surprise 8 nil lead at half time after a terrific contest where the possession was shared by both teams. Even then this was a tremendous effort by the Anandians who were making their first appearance in the current inter school season. Despite the odds against them they held on the heavy Thomian 'pack' quite successfully and also spoiled a number of scoring opportunities. Speedy wing three quarter Sumith Dahanayake put the Anandians in front while adding the finishing touches to a superb move. Centre Nipuna Vimukthi missed the conversion after having earlier fired across a good penalty. The Thomians made a good comeback with number eight Namal Rajapaksa scoring their try with Thajudeen adding the extra points. |
