SLIIT to diversify academic programs

The Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT) in a bid to provide quality IT education in Sri Lanka is to diversify its academic programs by 2004. The three areas of specialization are Information technology, Information Systems and Computer Systems and Networking. SLIIT also awards scholarships worth over Rs. 4.5 million each year to students who achieve superior academic per formance. Another 1000 students will also be admitted next October for its degree/diploma program.

The SLIIT is a degree awarding institute recognised by the University Grants Commission under the Universities Act. It was established in the year 1999 to educate and train sufficient Information Technology (IT) Professionals required by the fast growing IT Industry in Sri Lanka.

The institute is established to perform services such as * education and training of sufficient IT Professionals at a high level of excellence, * provision of IT Consultancy services and software services to the public sector and private sector of Sri Lanka at reasonable cost, * conduct and encouragement of research and development in IT leading to specialized applications, services and innovation IT products, * ensuring the availability of a rich pool of experts in IT within the country.

The SLIIT conducts programmes of studies leading to the Bachelor of Science Degree in Information Technology, the Bachelor of Science Special Honours De gree in Information Technology, the postgraduate Diploma in Information Technology, Diploma in Information Technology and several Con tinuing Professional Development programmes in niche areas in IT.

The SLIIT has also established the Software Development Centre to undertake Software and Consultancy services and the Sri Lanka Technology Incubator to undertake and encourage research and development in IT. Presently, the SLIIT operates three Campuses and a Centre Malabe Campus at Malabe, the Metropolitan Campus at Kollupitiya, Colombo, the Southern Campus at Kamburupitiya and the Kandy Centre at Peradeniya Road, Kandy. The SLIIT employs highly qualified Professors and lecturers with many years of experience in teaching and in industry.

The faculty is further enhanced by experienced staff from nearby universities as well as from foreign universities.

Facilities available include PC Laboratories, UNIX laboratories, multi-media laboratories, data-communication laboratories, software laboratories, computer networking laboratories and postgraduate research laboratories.

SLIIT also has a valuable collection of books and periodicals covering the entire range of studies and students have free access to the libraries, and the Internet. Admission to the first two programmes are open to students who have passed the GCE (A/L) in any subject stream, while those who seek admission to the programme in Computing Systems and Networking should have passed the GCE (A/L) in the Physical Science stream.

Students who sat the last GCE (A/L) examination and are awaiting results can also apply for admission to the course. Selection will be done on the results of an Aptitude Test which will be held on August 3, 2003.

New IT firm to offer end to end internet solutions

Calcey Technologies Pvt Ltd, a new IT firm to provide an end to end internet solutions and graphic media was launched at a ceremony held at Hotel Colombo Plaza.

Calcey Technologies, a California and Sri Lanka based company is to offer services such as e-commerce/internet application development, web site design, development and promotion, interactive multimedia CD, DVD/VCD video production and internet marketing. Calcey, a subsidiary of Karunaratne and Sons Ltd. has already completed four overseas projects and presently working on e-commerce site in USA. The company also has partnered with several US companies in sales and marketing.

Entera Inc. CA, USA, Nineup.com, CA, USA, Royal College.lk Sri Lanka and Ingrinlan ka.com, Sri Lanka are some of Calcey's developments. - (SP)

HP launches new products

Hewlett-Packard (HP) in another move to add latest consumer friendly IT products to Lankan market launched its new HP products recently at a function held at Hotel Galadari. HP new products such as D 220, D 330 and D 530 from the Desktop range nx 9010 from the notebook, PC h 1910 and xw 4100 from Pocket PC, PSC 1210, OJ 5110 and OJ 6110 from All-in-One range and LJ 1150, LJ 1300 from the personal Mono Laser jet range are some of the additions.

The theme of the event was a Running The Next Mile With You".

"We are happy to note the increase of market for HP products in Sri Lanka and we will continue to invest more money as we have seen our market performance improving significantly said T.V.T. Chari Vice President PSG South East Asia - Taiwan (HP).

Chari the Chief Speaker at the event also said that HP group would also extend its maximum co-operation towards the development of IT industry and IT education in Sri Lanka.
