Amateur Open Golf C'ships from October 7 to 14 by P. Rajaratnam in Nuwara Eliya The Sri Lanka Amateur Open Golf Championships will be worked off from October 7 to 14, 2003, at the Asia's celebrated Golf Links of Nuwara Eliya. A number of foreign teams from India, Pakistan, Malaysia, Singapore, Bangladesh will participate with our own Golf clubs in Sri Lanka this year. A number of events such as Stableford, Monthly Medals, R.E. Kannangara Trophy, Dudley Senanayake Trophy, Caddies Championships will be conducted along with others during the Amateur Championships. To attract both foreigners and our golfers the 114-year-old golf Course of Nuwara Eliya has undergone development and improvement in the recent past with the assignment of an English qualified Turf Culturist Dr. Vivian de Thabrew together with the veteran planter and the Evergreen Secretary of the Golf Club Clive Tissera with his staff have turned this course into immaculate conditions and it is hoped the best of Golfing will be on display during the Sri Lanka Amateur Golf Championships jointly organised by the Sri Lanka Golf Union. Meanwhile, Golfing in Nuwara Eliya takes its pace with foreign golfers from the European countries, with regular participants from Japan and other Asian countries, making special trips to Nuwara Eliya. For this purpose a full and comprehensive Golf program has been drawn up from January to December, 2003. |
