Sigiriya group correspondent Chief monk of the Rangiri Dambulu Raja Maha Viharaya, Ven. Inamaluwe Sri Sumangala Thera responding to the report "Buddha statues, Rock Temple abandoned" which appeared in the CDN of July 1 has sent the following clarification. The monk says that the Cultural Triangle is not entrusted with the conservation of any properties of the temple, but only the building, construction and maintenance of buildings. "The damages to the murals are not of recent origin. Owing to a construction fallacy of the Cultural Triangle, when cementing the floor of a cave temple the ceiling plaster on which murals are done got wet due to internal heat and the plaster of the murals began to fall. With the immediate intervention of the Department of Archaeology necessary preventive work was done about 12 years ago. After the installation of a new floodlight system, many things that were not visible could be seen clearly and those who view them would stir the public. "Finance of the temple is managed by the Public Trustee - and every expense is done under his supervision. "I am greatly concerned that this matter will disturb the public irrespective of any bias. Further, I assure that there has been no such damage to the murals, and we preserve them at any cost," Ven. Inamaluwe Sri Sumangala Nayake Thera said. |
