HNB Securities Ltd., a fully owned subsidiary of Hatton National Bank (HNB) conducted a seminar on Bond Investment Strategies at their conference hall at the HNB Towers on July 3. G. Ramanan, who has had exposure to a considerable amount of portfolio management experience, conducted the seminar. The seminar was chaired by Rienzie Wijetilleke - Chairman HNB Securities and Managing Director Hatton National Bank, whilst the guest speaker was K. G. D. D. Dheerasinghe, Superintendent and Registrar Public Debt Dept - Central Bank of Sri Lanka. Gamini Karunaratne, Director HNB Securities was also present.

The seminar was attended by institutional customers who were briefed on the many advantages offered by bond investments as well as tips on what factors to consider when dealing in them. One of the unique attributes in the seminar was that it offered the participants guidelines on accounting for Treasury Bonds since there are no proper standards adopted at present. Treasury Bonds are issued by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka through dedicated Primary Dealers such as HNB Securities on behalf of the government and varies in duration from 2-6 years or more.

Wijetilleke outlined how the low interest rate regime and the prevalent peace will stand to benefit the businesses community and the economy as a whole. He also outlined how well the government's fiscal policies have been managed by the Central Bank under trying conditions and now the whole country, thanks to the peace initiative, stands to improve and develop due to the massive amounts of funds promised during the Tokyo donor conference.
