Melbourne Calling

Melbourne based Melanie La'Brooy's first novel 'Love Struck' is currently on the shelves. The daughter of Marie and Keith La'Brooy, she was born in Sydney and raised in Melbourne, Melanie is training as a painting specialist with Christies in Melbourne. She studied fine arts at Melbourne University and is a fan of contemporary Australian work. One description of her novel reads 'a gloriously funny, fresh debut novel about art, alcohol and one girl's blossoming love affair with life, from an exciting new Australian voice in contemporary women's fiction'.

Colin Bogaars (part of the Bayacuda drummer group) was a colourful addition to the opening of snow season at Mt Buller recently. Colin and the drummer group have in recent times appeared at many functions in and around Melbourne, his colourful attire is worth a look at.

Gayani Sandamali Atukorala of Mount Waverley and Kanishka Dayawansa of Wheelers Hill, were two of the Victorian recipients of the 2002 Australian Students Prize, awarded on the basis of their year 12 results. Each winner receives a certificate of excellence and an award of $2,000 from the Commonwealth Government. It is made on the basis of recommendation from State and Territory Ministers responsible for Education. Congratulations to both.

Michele de Kretser is one of many authors to participate in readings @ Miettas 2003, to be held on Saturday July 5 - Sunday July 6 at the BMW Edge Theatre, Federation Square, Melbourne, from 10.00am to 5.00pm. The event is being held to celebrate 30 years of Readings and boasts of the best of Australian writing and culture.

Noel Nadesan (48), Sri Lankan born veterinarian and editor of an English and Tamil language newspaper 'Uthayam', was recently featured in James Button's, column, Naked City, in the Sunday Age newspaper. He spoke of his reason for migrating to Australia and the politics involved.

The Australia Ceylon Fellowship Inc announce their New Year's Eve Dinner Dance 2003 at the Malvern Town Hall. Band: The Christies Revival, Sumptuous Smorgasbord Dinner by Melanie and Mazhar Rauff.

Capt Elmo Jayawardena's article titled "The Old Man and the Lake: Koggala Revisited" appears in the July 2003 edition of the prestigious US based commercial airline magazine 'Airways'. The article is about Koggala and the Qantas Catalina flying boats for which the seaplane base there was the Western terminus of the nonstop Indian Ocean flights that operated during WW2.

The magazine is available at larger news agencies in and around Melbourne. Melbourne-based Roger Thiedeman is the magazine's Assistant Editor, who has also written a report on the new Business airline, Air Paradise international, in the same issue.
