E-learning programmes introduced in Sri Lanka

Introducing E-Learning educational programmes to developing countries such as Sri Lanka will immensely benefit the various countries and their people by helping improve the standards of their economies, e-College, Executive Vice President Douglas H. Kelsall said. He made these observations at a seminar on "Empowering People to cross the digital divide" held in Colombo to create an awareness among youth on the importance of following courses related to e-learning.

Kesall who was in Sri Lanka last week to conduct seminars on e-learning and also to promote the technology in the country is of the view that human resource development could be achieved to a greater extent through e-learning.

He said that the e-College which is based in Colorado, USA is expected to commence numerous e-learning courses in Sri Lanka shortly in collaboration with Textcentric Technologies, Colombo.

The courses we have planned to conduct in Sri Lanka are business and nursing courses, computer and IT programs. "It is commendable that the Lankan Government too on the initiative of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe is planning to expand the e-learning project to fulfil the future needs of people," he said. He said that the e-College is expected to provide integrated technology and service solutions that support the success and growth of online educational programmes.

The College serves public and private universities, career and community colleges, schools and state departments of education.

We are also expected to help institutions to meet their academic, enrolment and financial goals for their online programmes.

Textcentric, Chairman and Senior lecturer at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, USA Dr. Ananda Gunawardene said the company supports some of the fastest growing and largest online degree certificate and professional development programmes.

"We have developed the Adaptive Content Technologies (ACT) to deliver content with interactive tools to enhance the static nature of content and the ACT Adaptive documents and Adaptive book products are modeled on improving teaching, training and learning.

Several key areas including e- learning systems and trends, corporate learning and empowering people to cross the digital divide through e-learning were discussed at the seminar.
