by Sandasen Marasinghe Nadeesha Yasasri Ranmuthu an Information Technology Technician with the International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC), who was shot dead in Iraq on July 22 on his way to Baghdad from Hilla, was flown home yesterday. He was shot while on his way to the airport with an Iraqi driver to return to Sri Lanka after completion of his assignment in Iraq. Yasasri had been in Iraq late April to install communication facilities in the ICRC office and to train the operators. His body was flown to Sri Lanka yesterday (Friday). Yasasri (37), died of head injuries from the discharge of a high velocity rifled firearm at distant range, directed from his left side, AJMO Dr. Ajith Jayasena noted in the post-mortem report produced before the City Coroner Edward Ahangama. The AJMO further noted that there were firearm injuries to the abdomen causing fatal damage to the intra abdominal organs. The deceased was a resident at Thalapathpitiya Road, Nugegoda. Chandra Priyadarshi (35), wife of the victim, a teacher, said in evidence that her husband had been employed in the International Committee of the Red Cross for 11 years. They were parents of a three and half-year-old child. The City Coroner postponed the verdict for August 9. Evidence was led by PC Antony (27444) of Katunayake Police. The body of Yasasri will be taken to the ICRC office at Leyards Road in a procession at 8.00 am today where it will be kept there for one hour before taking to his residence in Maharagama. The cremation will take place at Maharagama on Sunday evening. |
