The Survey Department has started preliminary measurement work on the proposed Outer Colombo Ring Road, the Transport and Highways Ministry said yesterday. The Ring Road will connect to the Southern Expressway at Makumbura, Kottawa and to the Katunayake expressway at Mattumagala. Construction of the Ring Road is expected to be completed by 2007. The Ministry expects to finalise engineering plans and resettlement of affected families by end 2005. House and land owners will get compensation that exceeds current market rates and construction will start only after all affected families are resettled. The Ring Road is expected to reduce traffic congestion in and around Colombo and stimulate development in areas served by it. |
