Bicycles, once the most popular mode of transport in Jaffna, are going out of fashion as residents increasingly opt for motorcycles which are widely available for sale in the peninsula. Some have also purchased motorcycles in Vavuniya and Colombo and taken them to Jaffna through the A9 highway. Fuel is freely available in the peninsula, which has led to a dramatic growth in the number of vehicles there. Our photographer Ravindra Seneviratne saw these Jaffna girls learning to make the transition from the pedal-powered bicycle to the motorcycle, near the Jaffna library.
