SLPA men's Open Cycle Race sponsored by ANCL: First stage Colombo to Galle today by Chris Dhambarage The Sri Lanka Ports Authority Open Men's Racing Cycle Race organised by the Sri Lanka Ports Authority and conducted by the Interim Committee for Cycling in Sri Lanka will commence today with the first stage to be worked off from Colombo to Galle via Matara covering a distance of 206.06 kilometres This event is held to commemorate the 24th anniversary of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority and is sponsored by the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited (ANCL). The second stage will be from Galle to Colombo covering a distance of 125.08 kilometres. The race will start from opposite the Light House Colombo Port at 7.00 a.m. The race will be flagged off by the chairman of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority Parakrama Dissanayake and the riders will proceed along Galle Road, Mount Lavinia, Moratuwa, Kalutara, Ambalangoda, Galle, Matara and back to Galle. The turning point will be at Matara junction and the race will finish in the first stage in front of the Galle Port. The first feeding point will start from near the Maggona 51 kilometre post after the riders had completed 55.02 kilometres and will finish near the Beruwela Police Station. The second feeding point will commence from Thirangama opposite Suite Lanka Hotel after the riders had completed 101.03 kilometres and will finish near the Dodanduwa Bridge. The third feeding point will start at Midigama near Subash Hotel after 140.04 kilometres and will finish from opposite the Weligama Neptune Hotel. The fourth and last feeding point will start at the Weligama junction after 179 kilometres and will be concluded from opposite Latha Lace. The second stage will start at 9.00 a.m in front of the Galle Port and the race will be flagged off by the Minister of Public Administration Vajira Abeywardena. Galle Mayor Lionel Premasiri and the President of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority Sports Club Captain Nihal Keppetipoala will also be present on this occasion. The competitors will proceed along Ambalangoda, Kalutara, Moratuwa and reach Bambalapitiya through Galle Road. From Bambalapitiya the riders will turn towards Thunmulla junction, Borella, Baseline Road, Peliyagoda roundabout, Japan-Sri Lanka Friendship Bridge, Armour Street and will finish near the Jaya Terminal Gate of the Colombo Port at Hettiyawatte. The overall winner of the race will receive a challenge trophy and a cash award of Rs. 50,000 and the runner-up will receive a cash award of Rs. 30,000. The third placed rider will receive a cash award of Rs. 20,000, fourth place Rs. 10,000 and fifth place Rs. 5000. In addition the sixth, seventh, eight, ninth and tenth placed competitors will receive a cash award of Rs. 2000 each. In addition the 11th to the 15th placed riders will receive a cash award of Rs. 1000 each. The winner of the first stage will receive a cash award of Rs. 5000 and the runner-up will receive a cash award of Rs. 4000. The third place competitor will receive a cash award of Rs. 3000, fourth place Rs. 2000 and the fifth place Rs. 1000. The winner of the second stage will receive Rs. 5000, second Rs. 4000, third Rs. 3000, fourth Rs. 2000 and fifth Rs. 1000. In addition every rider who finishes the first stage will receive a T-shirt. The awards ceremony for the winners and the runners-up will take place on August 2 near the Jayabahalum Terminal of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority at 5.30 p.m under the patronage of Minister Rauff Hakeem. The Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Johnston Fernando, Sri Lanka Navy Commander Vice Admiral Daya Sandagiri, Working Director of Lake House D. K. Somasiri, Working Director of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority Mahilal Silva and the Director General of the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation Nimal Lakshapathiarachchi will be present for the awards ceremony. |
