by Rajmi Manatunga Equipment worth around Rs. 100 million will be provided this week to cluster bus companies islandwide, to ensure a better service for commuters along with the CTB fare hike effected from today. A Transport Ministry spokesman told the Daily News yesterday that the grant of tyres, tubes and batteries to CTB depots which was held up for a few weeks due to supply delays will be initiated this week. "Our original plan was to distribute these provisions before the fares are increased since the Transport Minister was of the view that we should provide a quality service to commuters before burdening them through a fare hike. Accordingly, tenders were called immediately to purchase the equipment. However, the suppliers' inability to provide them on time caused a delay in the process. But, the problems have been overcome by now," he explained. The project, launched using Treasury funds is aimed at adding over 900 non-operating buses with minor defects to the operational fleet of cluster bus companies islandwide. According to reports, around 3,000-4,000 buses lie idle in CTB depots around the country. Most of them have stopped operations owing to the lack of tyres and tubes. |
