by S. M. Jiffrey Abdeen - Kandy South Group Correspondent The government is taking steps to distribute building materials for the construction of 1,000 houses in every electorate. Roads coming under the purview of every Pradeshiya Sabha will also be developed and improved and in addition to this 1,600 rural electrification schemes will be inaugurated in the island and these will be diverted through the respective Regional Development Ministries and has been targetted to be completed before the end of April next year, said the Minister of Central Region Development Tissa Attanayake. He was speaking at a ceremony organised at the auditorium of the Ministry of Central Region Development in Getambe in connection with the ceremony organised to provide motor cycles to school teachers in the Kandy District at low cost. Minister Attanayake said that the trade unions including the National Education Workers Union made a big contribution in helping this government to power. In appreciation of this services several programmes beneficial to the teachers is being considered by the government. Among them are supplying of low cost motor cycles and house loans. Minister Tissa Attanayake continuing said that the aid obtained from the Tokyo Aid Consortium will be used for the improvement of every electorate and plans are being drawn up for this and improvements will be also made to the power supply in the electorates which will increase the present 62 per cent of electricity users to 76 per cent in the island. This will light up several villages all over the country which do not enjoy the facility of electricity, at present. |
