Book launch

The launch of the 90th Children's story book in a series of children's books by young versatile authoress Miss Janaki Sooriyarachchi, will be held on September 3 at 5 p.m. at the auditorium of the National Library Services Board, Independence Avenue, Colombo 7.

Books will be presented to the children of the Sucharithodaya Children's Home on this day. The chief guest at this function will be Prof. J. B. Dissanayake while Prof. Carlo Fonseka, Prof. Kusuma Karunaratne and Dr. Sunanda Mahendra will address the gathering.

Public lecture

An illustrated public lecture will be given by former Ambassador of the Government of Malaysia, Dato G. K. Ananda Kumarasiri on the subject Holistic Education will be held on Wednesday, September 3 at 4.30 p.m. at the auditorium of Dharmavijaya Foundation, 380/7, Bauddhaloka Mawatha, Colombo 7.

Dato Ananda Kumarasiri is a lecturer at the National Institute for Training of Diplomats, Malaysia and has authored several books on Buddhist Pedagogy under the heading "Living" Buddhism series.

Carnatic flute recital

Pitchaiappah Gnanavarthan will present a flute recital on September 3 at the Indian Cultural Centre, 133, Bauddhaloka Mawatha, Colombo 4.

Pitchaiappah Gnanavarthan hails from a family of renowned musicians in Sri Lanka.

He is the son and disciple of Kalasoori T. V. Pitchaiappah, from whom he learnt vocal music and violin. He learnt flute from his father and Sangeetha Vidwan V. Vinayahamoorthy, who is the younger brother of his father.

He is now a leading flutist in the UK. Gnani Master, as he is popularly known, teaches flute at Wimbldom Gnanapathy Temple, London Tamil Centre and Kingston Tamil School. He conducts vocal, violin and flute classes at his own school "Kavin Kalai".

The School Library Committee of St Sebastian's College, Moratuwa has organised a book exhibition and a sale of books from September 2 to 6 at the College library from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on all five days.

Several programmes for World Literary Day

The non-formal education unit of the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Education and Cultural Affairs has made arrangements to conduct several programmes to celebrate World Literary Day which falls on September 8. The Ministry also declared a literary week commencing September 1 - September 8. During this week there will be several awareness programmes in all the schools in Sri Lanka, and each and every Divisional Secretary's divisions. The Divisional Secretary Bentota U. D. C. Jayalal has made arrangements, to conduct a literary festival during this week at Cultural Centre in Bentota. The chief guest will be Galle District MP and UNP Media Spokesman Gayantha Karunatilake.
