by Ranil Wijayapala The obstacles placed on the road leading to the Madhu shrine have reportedly been cleared by the LTTE yesterday following messages that the Defence Ministry has taken measures to lift certain restrictions on civilians on the road. The road leading to the Madhu shrine was closed reportedly by the civilians backed by the LTTE protesting against restrictions on civilians by the Army. The Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) Chief Tryggve Tellefsen raised this matter with the Defence Secretary Austin Fernando and Army and Police officials last week and the clearing of the road was a result of the series of discussions. Defence Secretary Austin Fernando told the Daily News yesterday that measures taken by the Defence Ministry in this regard are yet to be conveyed to the SLMM in writing. However, he said the message has already been passed to the LTTE prompting them to take steps to clear the road. According to reports Rehabilitation, Reconstruction and Refugees Minister Dr. Jayalath Jayawardena also had to seek the assistance of the LTTE to get the road cleared for him to reach Madhu last week. However, the Catholic community has expressed their displeasure over the stance taken by the LTTE to close the Madhu road. |
