Jiffrey Abdeen - Kandy South group correspondent Sri Lanka earned Rs. 9,700 million as foreign exchange through the export of Export Agricultural crops last year. This is a remarkable fifty per cent increase in comparison to the year 2001 said the Minister of Agriculture Technology and Crop productivity Hemakumara Nanayakkara. He expressed this view when he addressed the gathering at the ceremonial opening of the newly built Export Agriculture Assistant director's Office in Gampaha. Minister Hemakumara Nanayakkara said that this significant increase in Export Agriculture Crop earnings is due to the dedication shown by those involved in the production of these crops which augurs well for the future and the same trend should continued. Minister Nanayakkara said that the Government intends to allocate 60 per cent of the aid received at the Tokyo aid Conference for the upliftment of the Agriculture sector, which should further boost this trade. Export Agricultural products such as pepper, cinnamon, vanilla and lemon grass have a great potential in the export market and they could be easily improved. These crops could be intercropped in coconut lands which are amply available in the area and value added spice products will fetch more foreign exchange in the world market. Minister Hemakumara Nanayakkara also said that the opening up of the Assistant Director's Office for Export Agriculture should be of immense assistance to those involved in the trade and they should make the use of it and obtain optimum benefit from it. |
