Govt. will uplift living conditions of fishing community

Wadduwa special correspondent

"The present Government under the leadership of the Prime Minister, will render a yeoman service to uplift the living condition of the fishing community of Sri Lanka. Already I have finalised arrangements to inaugurate a housing project for the fishing community in Kalutara district for fishermen before the end of this year to lead a decent life in society."

This was stated by Dr. Rajitha Senaratna the Minister of Lands participating in a ceremony held at the Town Hall Kalutara to distribute financial assistance to fishermen in the distress period organised by the Urban Council, Kalutara.

Dr. W. T. P. Ariyaratna Chairman UC Kalutara welcomed the gathering.

Addressing the gathering, he stressed that the fishermen are subjected to suffering as they have no permanent employment and assisting financially in a small way. The problem of the fishing community would be forwarded to the Ministry of Fisheries to implement a permanent solution to upgrade their living standard.

"Already the Government has commenced a massive project to conserve the sea coast. Sea erosion is a major problem faced by the fishing community. Sea erosion has washed away the cadjan houses of the fishermen rendering them homeless during the period of rough seas," he stated.

Further he stressed that the deeds of ownership of land for the fishermen would be issued within this year.

Most of the fishermen who live in coastal areas have no deeds of ownership of their lands.

Sumith Lal Mendis, a Provincial Council Member of the Western Province (WP), Dr. W. T. P. Ariyaratna the Chairman of UC Kalutara, Lasman Henry a member of the UC Kalutara also addressed the meeting.
