IAAF GP finals this weekend

by Dinesh Weerawansa

The international athletic calender would conclude with the IAAF Grand Prix finals this weekend in Monaco, which would offer lucrative cash awards running up to USD 100,000 (nearly Rs. ten million) each for the top duo.

The best male and female World Athletes of the Year, picked by IAAF on overall world rankings, will each receive an award of US$100,000. Their names will be announced at the prestigious annual World Athletics Gala, on Sunday (14) in Monte-Carlo, by International Athletic Foundation President, HSH Crown Prince Albert of Monaco and IAAF President Lamine Diack of Senagal.

The first and the second runner-up of both the men's and women's categories will also be given cash prizes of US$50,000 and US$25,000 each - for the second and third athletes in both the men's and women's Overall standings. Uniquely the World Athlete of the Year is being decided by positions in the IAAF World Rankings Overall list (as at 14 September 2003), after the conclusion of competition on the second and final day of the inaugural IAAF World Athletics Final in Monaco's Stade Louis II (Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 September).

Unfortunately, none of Sri Lanka's athletes are within the top 100 in the overall list. The highest ranked Sri Lankan ever in the overall category (all events included) was Susanthika Jayasinghe, who was 87th amongst top women in the world circuit in late 2000.

She was within the top ten in the world for both 100m and 200m during that period. Jayasinghe, however, is still within the best 20 in women's 100m world rankings. PRIZE MONEY 1st place: 100 000 USD, 2nd place: 50 000 USD, 3rd place: 25 000 USD.
