Sampath Bank and Police contest cager final

by Ken de Joodt

With the Colombo Super League 2003 basketball tournament drawing to a close today with the grand final at 7.00 p.m. Sampath Bank will take on Police SC under lights at the Depot Police Courts, Bambalapitiya. The women's final between Track Master and Josephians BC would precede that at the same venue at 5.00 p.m.

Sampath Bank qualified for the finals when they beat Delmege by nine points in a thrilling encounter at the Depot Police Court on Tuesday while Police beat Wattala in the other semi-final. The consolation final between Wattala and Delmege was played on Thursday at the Police Courts. The women's consolation final between Air Force and Ramblers also took place on the same day.

Meanwhile Moratuwa BC "B" could play Maroons BC in the finals of the Men's "B" division competition on Thursday. Maroons beat NYSC in the first semi-final of the competition while Moratuwa "B" beat Colombo International School in the other semi-final. Colombo International School won the consolation final of the "B" division competition.

In the finals of the women's "B" division competition between Maharagama BC and David Peiris and the Maharagama side won the game by 14 points to secure the title of the women's "B" division competition. The consolation final was won by Colombo University when they beat St. Joseph's BC by a solitary point at St. Joseph's Girls School, Nugegoda.

This tournament is organised by Colombo District Basketball Association (CDBA) affiliated to the Sri Lankan Basketball Federation (SLBF) and sponsored by MOL. Apart from the Depot Police Courts and the courts at St. Joseph's Girls' School, Nugegoda, Amal International too hosted quit a few "B" division matches while the 10 top teams in the island vied for honours in the Men's "A" division competition. Five teams each took part in the women's "A" and "B" divisions. 16 teams took part in the Men's "B" division competition.

Previous year's winners of the Men's "A" division competition, Colombo Bulls had a rather disappointing tournament when they lost their first two matches in the competition. They lost the curtain raiser of the competition to Sampath Bank in a thrilling game while the Police SC crushed them by a massive margin. Although they managed to win their remaining matches against Sri Lanka Army and Moratuwa BC those were not sufficient for them to get through to the finals. The other teams in the "A" division competition were hosts Colombo BC, Air Force, Wattala BC, Delmege and David Peiris. In the women's section notable absentees were Sri Lanka Navy the defending champs of the women's competition.

A close encounter is expected in this final according to Sri Lanka Basketball Coach, Ajith Kuruppu.
