Seevali MMV win Stubbs shield

Seevali Madya Maha Vidyalaya with 32 points emerged as the overall champions at the 85th Stubbs Shield boxing meet conducted by the Sri Lanka Schools Boxing Association and worked off at the Sugathadasa indoor stadium.

The boxers from Seevali Madya Maha Vidyalaya dominated this three-day meet winning five titles under different weight categories. This was also the fifth occasion that they have won the overall championship having made their presence felt in 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000.

Seevali MMV's success was in the balance until the final bout where K. G. Senanayake outpointed his opponent M. L. P. Prabath of Nalanda in the under 17 to 20 years 57-60 kgs feather weight category event. With this result Royal who collected 31 points had to be satisfied with the runners-up position. Earlier B. A. J. M. Muniperuma gave Seevali MMV a good start winning the under 13 to

14 years 34-46 kgs pin weight event over T. B. J. G. Bandara of Pilimatalawa MMV. M. M. R. Ratnapala produced a similar performance as he defeated L. H. T. Eranjith of Mapalana MMV in the under 14 to 15 years 39-42 kgs bantam weight event.

Seevali MMV went on to clinch two more finals through W. J. Surendra and P. P. R. S. Patabendi as they boosted their chances of regaining the title after a lapse of two years.

First it was Surendra who had the better of H. G. S. C. Bandaranayake of Pilimatalawa MMV in the under 14 to 15 years 41-43 kgs feather weight event. P. P. R. S. Patabendi also produced a fine performance to beat M. J. Sumanaweera of Kingswood College Kandy in the under 17 to 20 years 42-45 kgs pin weight category event.

R. T. Weerakkody of Dedigama MV was named as the best boxer in the junior championship for his outstanding performance in the under 15 to 16 years 46-48 kgs welter weight final against P. D. D. Krishantha of Mapalana MV. W. S. K. Fernando of Vidyarathna Horana was picked as the best loser in the junior category.

Meanwhile W. A. G. D. Weragoda of Bandaranayaka Central Veyangoda was named as the best boxer in the senior category. He impressed by overcoming D. L. Kahatapitiya of Vidyarathna Horana in the under 17 to 20 years 54-57 kgs feather weight final.

In addition M. L. P. Prabath of Nalanda was selected as the best loser in the senior championship. He gave a spirited performance before losing to K. G. Senanayake of Seevali MMV in the under 17 to 20 years 57-60 kgs final.

The Managing Director of Slimline Dian Gomes was the chief guest and distributed the awards.
