Civilian killed, police prevent separatist rally in Kashmir SRINAGAR, India, Thursday (AFP) A Muslim civilian was killed in crossfire between Muslim rebels and borders guards in Indian Kashmir, while a senior separatist and about a dozen of his supporters were detained for holding an anti-government rally, officials said Thursday. The 21-year-old civilian was killed when was caught in a firefight between militants and India's Border Security Force (BSF) personnel late Wednesday in a sleepy village near the highway township of Awantipora, 30 kilometers (19 miles) south of summer capital Srinagar, a BSF spokesman said. He said the BSF had laid an ambush in the area on a tip-off. Meanwhile, Javed Mir, vice chairman of the pro-independence Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) and about 12 supporters were rounded up by police Thursday while protesting against alleged security force excesses and harsh anti-terror laws in Kashmir, witnesses said. Mir and his supporters were attempting to march from the Abi Guzar area of Srinagar when police halted them and loaded them into waiting security vehicles. |
