Army Commander's message for 54th anniversary

The message delivered by the Commander of the Army Lt. Gen. L. P. Balagalle RWP, RSP, VSV, USP, on the occasion of the 54th anniversary of the Sri Lanka Army. It is with esteem and satisfaction that I, as Commander of the Army, deliver this message today (10 October) marking the 54th anniversary of the Sri Lanka Army.

The services rendered by the Army since its inception on 10.10.1949 to protect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of our motherland, Sri Lanka is immortal and commendable. The nation pays its tribute to all valiant soldiers who have offered their best during the past two decades fighting against the ruthless terrorists and driving them towards a peaceful settlement.

Accomplishments of the Army during the past 54 years are remarkable. Traversing through the past, we as personnel of the SL Army could be happy over our past and present. The Sri Lanka Army at present is a well-equipped force, which has the experience of fighting one of the most dreaded terrorists in the world. Invitations for participation in seminars and workshops, extended to us by other armies overseas in order to share our experiences in the field of war, is a good example in point.

By studying our victories humbly and also examining our setbacks deeply we would make our way to success in future. This organisation should remain stable and open to further development when reigns are handed over to the future generation. Therein leaders at all levels should design vocational training and also qualitative development in the fields of obedience, acquiescence, bravery, loyalty, leadership, etc with a view to enhancing the standard of the Army.

I take this opportunity to convey my appreciation to all your parents, teachers and elders who extended their guidance and blessings for your joining the Army as a brave youth. I also extend my gratitude on this special day to all retired officers and men who had given their best to raise the Army to the present standards.

With honour, I recall the services, extended by all persons Killed in Action (KIA), Wounded in Action (WIA) and Missing In Action (MIA) whilst fighting to protect our motherland against terrorism. Their deeds in laying their lives for the bright future of the country will be inscribed in gold in our history. The Sri Lanka Army will remain committed to maintain all welfare measures extended to families of those persons and also to persons serving at present.

On the occasion of this 54th anniversary, I wish all retired and serving officers and other ranks and civilians employed in the Army, success in all future endeavours with the blessings of the Noble Triple Gem and all deities.
