35 teams enter Mercantile Indoor Cricket

The Mercantile Indoor Cricket Tournament which is being conducted by the Ceylon Indoor Cricket Association (CICA) kicked off on October 6, 35 teams entered this year's tournament categorized in 3 divisions.

Indoor cricket which is comparatively a new sport has attracted quite a few teams who now play the sport quite regularly with lots of enthusiasm.

The tournament takes place every weekday (Monday to Friday) from 6.30 p.m. to 10.00 p.m. with four games being played everyday and over a 100 players and spectators participating.

"It is quite a carnival atmosphere out here," states Tournament Director Hiran de Mel. "Teams have identified this sport as competitive and enjoyable mainly because of the convenient times that it's being played, the duration of the entire game, which is about an hour and a half.

It is a glamorous affair with teams clad in coloured clothing and plenty of excitement being created by the respective cheering squads" adds Hiran.

Austasia Sports and Leisure Club have also offered prizes for the 'player of the day' which adds more excitement to this tournament says Gamini Perera, Sales Manager, Austasia.

One of the unique features of this year's tournament is that for the first time in indoor cricket history of Sri Lanka an overseas player has been contracted by a local team. Shanthamoorthy Sengeni from India who was seen in action at the recently concluded Challenger Cup, who was also adjudged Man of the Final has been contracted to play for Lanka Yalta Lions.

"Lanka Yalta has always contributed for the 'uplift' of indoor cricket and even previously contracted players from different clubs and afforded opportunities" states Thiran Thenabdu, Managing Director of Lanka Yalta.

At the end of the first week the following teams led their respective Divisions:

Division 1 Lanka Yalta (Lions)

Division 2 Lanka Yalta (Cubs)

Division 3 A Expo Lanka

B Amana Takaful 'A'
