Standing the test of time
This 114 year bund, known as Liyangastota vella built by the British across the Walawe Ganga, has withstood the test of time and continue to facilitate the irrigation of large tracts of paddy land in the Ridiyagama and Mamadawala areas. The bund is 240 feet long and was built in 1889. It diverts water from the Walawe Ganga to irrigate over 15,000 acres.

New law to ban toxic food, beverages

The Government will shortly introduce legislation that will require manufacturers of all mass produced consumer items like fast foods, beverages, soaps, cosmetics, sweetmeats, delicacies, pharamaceuticals and dubious herbal products etc. to submit 'genuine samples' to the Government Analyst's Department for detection of any possible traces of toxin or toxic substances in these products.

Navy to prepare new operational procedures

The Navy yesterday decided to prepare new operational procedures in dealing with special circumstances, following shocking allegations by the Navy commander that the leak of information allegedly by the Scandinavian truce monitors had foiled a Navy operation to track down an alleged LTTE arms smuggling ship, the Defence Ministry said.
