| News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | Three held in UNP MP assassination plot : PS opposition leader implicated by Prasad Purnamal Chilaw police on Saturday arrested three suspects allegedly involved in a plot to assassinate Puttalam district UNP Member of Parliament Neomal Perera. The suspects, residents of Manuwangama on questioning confessed that they were hired by the PA Arachchikattuwa Pradeshiya Sabha opposition leader to execute the plan. Chilaw Police SSP Upali Ranasinghe told the Daily News yesterday that they arrested the suspects following a complaint by Perera that he was subject to death threats. The suspects have admitted that they plotted to assassinate the MP on the directive of the Arachchikattuwa Pradeshiya Sabha opposition leader. They have also confessed that they intended to carry out the plan during an inauguration ceremony in Chilaw yesterday attended by Ministers. According to police, the first two suspects had been in possession of a hand grenade allegedly provided by the PA leader and a sword at the time of arrest. Police also recovered another shot gun when they searched the third suspect's house in the wee hours of Saturday. The suspects produced before Chilaw Magistrate were remanded until October 31. |
