by Asanga Warnakulasuriya Three members of the armed gang who broke into the Seylan Bank Padukka branch near the Meegoda Economic centre on October 25 and got away with cash Rs. 2.7 million was nabbed yesterday by Western Province North Crimes Division. Police also recovered the Town Ace vehicle used in the robbery along with Rs. 700,000 of the loot an automatic weapon, three "galkatas" pistols, 23 T56 bullets and a rambo knife alleged to have been used in the robbery. Several gold chains bought from the stolen money was also seized in addition to a mobile phone belonging to a bank customer. Investigations revealed that the five member gang relatively new to the underworld had first hired the Town Ace van from a rent-a-car company in Delkanda to be used for the robbery, SI Chandana Gamage of WP North Crimes Division told the Daily News yesterday. They had stormed the bank and threatened the bank manager to open the safe. Later the suspects fled with the cash, he added. Acting on a tip-off received from an informant, ASP Priyantha Jayakody of the Crimes Division Unit recovered the vehicle alleged to have been used in the robbery. The suspects aged between 25-30 years are said to be residents of Maharagama and Pannipitiya. However, the mastermind behind the robbery is yet to be arrested. According to Police, the main suspect is still missing with the rest of the money. Under the Directions of the Western Province North DIG, Padmasiri Liyanage, SP Premasiri Vithana, ASP Priyantha Jayakody the OIC Gamini Ratnayake is conducting further investigations.
