Traitors mislead Maha Nayaka Theras - alleges Ven. Medhananda

by Asela Kuruluwansa and Indika Polkotuwa

Certain unpatriotic traitors who are subservient to the influence of money are attempting today to misguide the Venerable Mahanayaka Theras and use a single word out of their statements to distort and exaggerate facts, stated Ven. Ellawala Medhananda Thera, addressing a convention of the Mahasangha held at Kandy, on November 12.

Over 700 members of the Buddhist clergy attended this meeting organized by the National Sangha Council held at the Maha Maluwa of the Sri Dalada Maligawa, Kandy.

Addressing the meeting, Ven. Medhananda Thera stated that the Maha Sangha has a historic duty to open up their minds whenever the country, its people and the religion are in danger.

"This country is bestowed upon the Maha Sangha on nine successive occasions. People are blaming the Buddhist clergy alleging that the Maha Sangha is silent and neglecting their duty when the country is in peril. The Buddhist clergy is helpless when certain individuals are servile to pecuniary benefits offered by traitors," pointed out the venerable Thera.

Continuing his address Ven.Medhananda Thera stated that the sovereign power of protecting the country is vested with not the President, nor with the Prime Minister or the Ministers, but with the Maha Sangha. Maha Sangha is not there to hold a brief by the President or the Prime Minister. They hold a brief only by the Buddha. Today, our objective of establishing a Supreme Sangha Council is to make available an institution which is empowered to issue statements on matters of political, economic, cultural, social and religious interest and enlighten people on such matters and bring pressure upon the Government to follow the correct course, stated venerable Medhananda Thera.

Ven. Dr. Omalpe Sobhitha Thera, Ven. Athuraliye Ratana Thera and Executive Committee Member of the Asgiriya Chapter Ven. Anamaduwe Dhammadassi Thera also spoke.
