The United University Teachers' Association in a statement issued yesterday has called upon the President to hand over the three Ministries taken by her to the UNF government to enable Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to continue the farsighted programme of work he had started for rebuilding the country and nation without interruption. The statement signed by Association President Prof. H. W. Cyril and Secretary Prof. M. O. A. de Zoysa said that the Association believed that the President should have considered not only the constitutional situation but also the current situation in the country in arriving at her decision. The Association firmly believed that whatever the constitutional situation may have been the instant situation in the country had not created an environment which warranted the takeover of the ministries. The mandate given by the people to the UNF at the 2002 General Election and the 2003 local government election created a situation where governmental power devolved on the UNF. The statement added that the Association also refuted the oft repeated argument that national security was threatened as a fallacy put forward to justify an illegal action. All efforts made by the UNF government to bring economic prosperity, peace and stability to the country by relieving the burdens imposed on the people by the previous regime have been subdued by the President's arbitrary action of taking over the three ministries. Therefore the Association calls upon the President to hand over these ministries to the UNF government to enable the Prime Minister to continue his programme of work aimed at rebuilding the country and nation. |
