D. M. Jayaratne 'tunes' the budget

by our Parliament correspondents

PA General Secretary and MP D. M. Jayaratne yesterday broke into verse adding some colour to the otherwise drab budget debate laced with heavy statistics.

Jayaratne recited 70 poems referring to every aspect of the budget and his performance lasted for nearly 20 minutes.

Both the Government and the Opposition showed their appreciation to the MP's poetic skills by thumping their tables.

Chief Government Whip and Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe who followed Jayaratne commended the member's performance.

"It is a hard act to follow the performance of the member and even interpreters could not keep up with the rhythm," he added.
