TNA members voted with the Government while the PA and the JVP voted against. The EPDP was not present in the Chambers at the time of voting. Dissident PA MP V. Puthrasigamani was also absent. The vote was taken amidst tumultuous scenes as raucous members engaged in verbal duels across the floor. Amidst the din, Parliamentary Affairs Minister A. H. M. Azwer, raising a point of order, told the Speaker that the PA and the JVP had voted against the Ministries headed by the President. "The President had taken over three Ministries namely Defence, Media and Interior. But the PA and JVP voted against these Ministries today. This must be recorded," he added. This brought a ready response from JVP Parliamentary Group Leader Wimal Weerawansa who quipped that the UNF had voted in the President's favour. "We too want this on record. The UNF had voted for the Ministries taken over by the President." |
