Jani wins a double by Dinesh Weerawansa Sri Lanka Army ermerged overall champions at the Defence Services Sports Festival 2003 athletic championships concluded at the Sugathadasa Stadium, Colombo yesterday. The soldiers aggregated 190 points to take the overall title. They underlined their supremacy in all long distance and endurance testing events while their newly emerging sprinters too had their won share in track events. Sri Lanka Navy emerged runners up in the overall championships with 95 points while Air Force finished a close third with 85 points. Army's dominance was equally evident in both in men's and women's events. They accounted for both the titles in grand fashion. Army had 122 points in winning men's title, ahead of second-placed Navy (40). Army's aggregate in taking women's title was 68 points while Navy ended runners up with 55 points. There were no new record breaking performances on the final day which too was effected by rain. Sri Lanka's Asian Championship bronze medallist, Annne Maheshi Silva of Sri Lanka Navy was beaten by Army's B.A.N. Lakmali who cleared 47.90m. But Silva's form was understandable as she was competing after she was sick a few weeks ago and was out of training. Nevetheless, Silva was a close second with 47.53m. Airwoman Jani Chaturangani Silva completed a double. She followed up her women's 200m title on day one with the 100m final in 12.22 seconds. Air Force proved that they have the fastest women among the Defence Services as they secured first three places. Army's S.P.N. Hemantha emerged the fastest man at the meet winning men's 100m in 10.85 seconds. Sri Lanka athlete Harjan Ratnayake, who was placed second to Indika Kumara in 110m hurdles, won his pet event yeserday - men's 400m final in 52.66 seconds. The two-day meet was a well organised affair under the patronage of the Chairman - Athletics of the Defence Services Sports Board and Athletic Association of Sri Lanka Vice President, Shemal Fernando.
