Olcott memorial cricket tourney on December 6 Cricketers of yesteryear will show their grit on 6th December at the Uyanwatte Stadium, when the 5th Annual Col. Henry Steele Olcott Memorial Limited Overs Cricket Tournament will be worked off. At a press conference held at the Bloomfied Cricket and Athletic Club Pavilion, Bandula Warnapura, former Sri Lanka cricket captain, confidently expressed his opinion that the tournament has gone from strength to strength during the last four years. The hosting school, Sri Rahula, Matara will have a handful of activities scheduled during the tournament from the opening ceremony on 5th December with the Buddhist schools' limited overs tournament taking place. Since Maliyadeva, the inaugural winners in 1999, the tournament got off to a flying start with Dharmaraja (2000), Dharmasoka (2001) and Ananda and Dharmasoka (2002- joint champs) taking the honours. The tournament will have a Plate championship six a side for the losing sides. Leading names in the field of cricket who have represented the Olcott schools like Arjuna Ranatunga, Bandula Warnapura, Jayantha Seneviratne, Ranjith Madurasinghe, Sudharman De Silva, Ajith De Silva, Mahinda Pethiyagoda, Gajaba Pitigala, Sidat Wettimuni, Thilan Wijesinghe, Lal Ranasinghe, W.L. Withanage, D.D.P. Alwis and T.K. Palitha will represent their respective schools. Warnapura also made it very clear that cricket played during their time was unique and the sportsmanship was at the highest levels. |
