Aitken Spence Forbes coveted list of 200 Aitken Spence was listed by the prestigious Forbes Magazine as being among the 200 most successful companies outside the United States, with annual sales of under One Billion US Dollars. The list also included Distilleries Co. of Sri Lanka and 18 top Indian companies such as Wipro, Infosys Technologies, Dr. Reddy's Labs, Zee Films, HDFC Bank, Oriental Bank of Commerce and Asian Paints. The 200 successful companies were selected from among 19,000 publicly traded concerns, judged on strict criteria and aimed at businesses that were profitable, displayed entrepreneurship and also rewarded shareholders. The magazine screened out most corporations that did not have operating margins of at least 5 per cent in the latest year. Sumi to head Public Utilities Commission Chairman of Bank of Ceylon Sumi Moonesinghe has been appointed as the Head of Public Utilities Commission and the Western Region Development Commission, reliable sources said. Moonesinghe will relinquish her duties as Chairman, Bank of Ceylon at the end of the year having done successful corporate transformations at the bank. (SP) Traders cautious in Bourse The Colombo Bourse Indices dropped further yesterday with All Share Price Index dropping to 1,138.9 points from 1,166.6 and the Milanka Price Index to 2,050.5 from 2,113.1. According to market analysts, the continued uncertainty in the political arena has promoted the traders to be cautious in making investment. Turnover for the day was Rs. 103,035,550 million. Domestic purchases for the day was 1,711 million and foreign purchases were Rs. 35 million. The day's largest contributors were SLT, Nations Trust, Vanik Incorp, Distilleries, Asian Hotels and Ceylon Glass. Yesterday's top five gainers were Vanik Incorp Ltd, Singer, Mahaweli Reach, Udapussellwawa and Confifi Hotel ABS accredited by CIMA UK The Academy of Business Studies (ABS) has been conferred the 'CIMA Quality Partner' accreditation by the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) UK. It is only given to selected educational institutes after stringent tests and assessments and ABS is the first Institute in Sri Lanka to be honoured with this accreditation. The CIMA Quality Partner Accreditation was presented to Faris Ismail the CEO of ABS by Kathy Grimshaw, Director- International CIMA UK at the Colombo Hilton on November 18 under the patronage of Dr. Karunasena Koddituwakku, Minister of Human Resource Development, Education and Cultural Affairs.
