Thousands of devotees from all corners of the country flocked to the Sri Dalada Maligawa early yesterday to pay homage to the Sacred Tooth Relic with the dawn of the New Year.Annually, devotees pay homage to the Sacred Tooth Relic on January 1 every year but yesterday was exceptional as it recorded a remarkable increase in numbers with a peaceful atmosphere prevailing in the country, Diyawadana Nilame, Neranjan Wijeratne said.Meanwhile, large crowds were also seen at the four devales at the Rajopawanaramaya at Getembe yesterday.

India upgrades Palaly

Strengthening closer Defence ties with Sri Lanka, the Indian Government has offered to assist Sri Lanka to upgrade the Palaly air base in the Jaffna peninsula by providing Rs. 500 million, Defence Ministry sources told the Daily News. The Indian Government pledged to assist the Sri Lankan Government during Army Commander Lieutenant General Lionel Balagalle's recent visit to India.

SLMC proposes interim Constitution

The Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) yesterday came up with a proposal for an interim constitution for the country as a formula to reach consensus between "the divergent and the polarised views of the different stake holders".
