by Ranil Wijayapala Nordic Truce monitors amicably settled the dispute over a 'firing position' in Pullimulai, Batticaloa with the LTTE dismantling the controversial "build-up position" from its location last week, SLMM spokeswoman Agnes Bragadottir said yesterday. She said the truce monitors who visited the controversial area last week observed that the firing position had been removed. "This is a positive result achieved through a series of dialogue between the Security Forces and the LTTE under the SLMM's facilitation," Bragadottir added. Security Forces and the Police in Batticaloa in mid December complained about this suspected LTTE build-up alleged to be a bunker constructed in the Government controlled area in violation of the ceasefire agreement. However, following an initial investigation by truce monitors, it was confirmed that this was a firing position with several sand bags for its protection. The Truce Monitors said the controversial build-up was in an area claimed by both parties and needed dialogue with the two parties to settle the dispute. "The Security Forces and the LTTE had discussions thrice on this issue under the SLMM's facilitation," Bragadottir said. The SLMM Spokeswoman said truce monitors in Batticaloa handed over the report on January 2 after visiting the area to obtain first hand information. |
