Farmers in Wayamba are against UNP - Maithripala Sirisena

Kuliyapitiya group correspondent

"The Wayamba PC election will come first since it will be dissolved on February 8. We have no doubt about winning the election as the agricultural community in Wayamba are against the UNP", said SLFP General Secretary, Maithripala Sirisena addressing an SLFP political seminar held at Iriyagolla Office organised by Katugampola SLFP central organisation at Iriyagolla.

He added that the anti-UNP wave was rising like a storm throughout the country. During the last two years the UNF Government failed to perform anything good for the common masses, instead even the subsidies given were withdrawn.

Not only the peasants and workers but also the judges, administrative service officers and custom officers picketed against the UNF Government, he said.

Although the Government did not do any good for the common masses it gave every possible facility and privilege to the business community. The UNP has no concern about the common man. It follows an agenda and timetable of the international community, he added.

"Critics ridiculed the SLFP-JVP Alliance as a "Balagiri" which will come not today but tomorrow.

"However, the Alliance agreement will be signed this month. I know the date but will not disclose it today. The Constitution, policy statement and program of the Alliance are agreed by the two parties.

"Alliances are nothing new to SLFP. We are in an alliance even now. In 1956 and 1970 the SLFP won elections through alliances.

"The SLFP-JVP Alliance will be formed taking the experiences from the past alliances," said the General Secretary.

Kurunegala District MP, Anura Priyadarshana Yapa said that Parliamentarians, Provincial Councillors and PS members were elected through the votes SLFP polled and preferential votes they received from the SLFPers.

He said it was essential for all those representatives to look into the problems, hardships and difficulties confronting them and formulate solutions for such problems.

"When the SLFP in power we pay less attention for the problems of our people. It is a fault of ours," the MP said.

Kurunegala District MP, S. B. Navinna, Anuradhapura District MP, S. M. Chandrasena, Kurunegala District MP, T. B. Ekanayaka, Wayamba Chief Minister, Anula Wijesinghe, Wayamba PC Member, Ranjith Wijesiri and Pannala PS Member, Ranjith Lansakara also spoke.
