SLBA to study extended banking hours by Ramani Kangaraarachchi Minister of Trade and Commerce Ravi Karunanayaka has called upon the Sri Lanka Bankers Association (SLBA) to explore the possibility of extending bank customer services till 5.30 or 6.00 p.m. on working days. Minister Karunanayake said that this system has worked well in foreign countries towards the development of the economy and he was hopeful of its implementation in Sri Lanka too. Managing Director, Commercial Bank and Chairman SLBA Amitha Gooneratne at the next SLBA meeting is to get the views of its members whether it is possible to accommodate the minister's request. Secretary General, SLBA Gaston Gunawardena said that selected branches of some banks are already open during weekends and for them there won't be any difficulty. But extending bank hours is a cost factor as they have to pay their staff overtime, electricity bills and telephone bills. However, if that costs can be compensated by the income during extended hours it is worthwhile implementing the minister's request, Gunawardena said. Further action will be taken considering the views of the SLBA. |
