by Jayantha Sri Nissanka The Roman Catholic Church of St. Michael's in Katuwana, Homagama came under a mob attack early yesterday for the second time in three weeks. Police blamed religious extremists for the attack, one of several reported throughout the country in the recent past. The mob had entered the Church by cutting the barbed- wire fence. They had then broke open the door to gain entry into the church. "The mob had set fire to the pews and the altar of the Church," Homagama OIC Athula Weerasinghe said. Police believe the group responsible for the earlier attack was behind yesterday's incident too. During the earlier attack, the group had destroyed the cross and planted a bo-tree in the church premises. On a complaint by the parish priest of the Church, Homagama Police had investigated. On the last occasion after Police took steps to quell the situation and ease tension in the area, the gang organised a protest against the Homagama Police with nearly 6,000 people. The protestors alleged that the officer inquiring into the incident favoured Christians. Thereafter, the officer has been transferred to Mirihana. Police is investigating to track down those responsible for the attack. |
